This is a Chinese name; the family name is Yeo. George Yong-Boon Yeo (born 13 September 1954; simplified Chinese: 杨荣文; traditional Chinese: 楊榮文; pinyin: Yáng Róngwén) is a politician from Singapore. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he is currently the country's Minister for Foreign Affairs. Prior to taking up his present role as Minister for Foreign Affairs, Yeo previously served as Minister for Information and the Arts, Minister for Health, and Minister for Trade and Industry. Yeo has been a Member of Parliament representing the Aljunied Group Representation Constituency since 1988. In the 2006 General Elections, Yeo's team won the constituency with 56.1% of the votes to the Workers' Party's 43.9%. This was the narrowest victory in any Group Representation Constitiuency at that election, and came in the wake of the controversy surrounding one of the Worker's Party's candidates, James Gomez. The main issues in the elections included employment; cost of living; government policies; the need for an effective opposition voice in parliament; and the quality of the candidates. Yeo was the first Singaporean Minister to start blogging. He has been blogging since August 2006. Yeo is married to lawyer Jennifer Yeo Lai Peng and he is also the uncle of Chinese American actress Gwendoline Yeo. Yeo has taken an important role in restarting the ancient Buddhist university, Nalanda University, in Bihar, India. Military Career Prior to joining politics, Yeo was a distinguished military officer. A President's Scholar, graduate from Cambridge and Harvard, he served as a Signals officer and later joined the Republic of Singapore Air Force. His last held rank was Brigadier-General as the Director of Joint Operations. External links Dummipedia: Biography of George Yeo Preceded by ?
