At the time, Susan, a Kristen Blake look alike, is paid to give birth to a baby that would then be adopted by Kristen. Unbeknown to John Black, Kristen, John's fiance miscarries his baby. Susan realizes that Kristen is deceptive and cruel while John is loving and noble. As the real mother of the child that Kristen and John claim as theirs, Susan plans to take Kristen's place at John's side and in his bed. Marlena Evans however, manages to foil both Kristen and Susan's plans; Marlena and John reunite, and Susan is content to then find love with Edmund Crumb. Salemites believe that EJ is then raised by Susan and Edmund who move to England. Stefano however manages to snatch EJ from Susan, raising him at Maison Blanche and sending him to English boarding schools. EJ enjoys his childhood and claims that he and his father have an excellent relationship. EJ returns to Salem in 2006, and moves across the hall from Sami Brady. He immediately feels a connection to her. Kate Roberts seeing the attraction as a roadblock, keeps EJ in the picture to keep Sami away from her son, Lucas.[4] A mysterious, gloved hand begins causing havoc among the people of Salem, more so towards the Brady family. It is revealed that EJ is the mysterious gloved hand. Everyone also learns that he is the son of Stefano DiMera, and Susan Banks. EJ becomes the prime suspect in John Black's shooting, he makes plans to leave town before he is caught. Before he leaves he has sex with Sami Brady, in return for helping her husband Lucas Horton. EJ returns to Salem, because of the lack of evidence against him. He continues to cause havoc among Sami & Lucas' relationship. EJ learns Sami is pregnant, and the baby could be his. Sami lies, and says the baby is Lucas'. EJ finds out Sami lied, and offers a proposal.[5] Either he tells Lucas the truth, or she leaves Lucas and runs away with him. She reluctantly agrees to run away with him. However she is conspiring with Celeste to kill him. Sami meets EJ at the cabin, which is set on fire, and Sami believes EJ is dead. EJ resurfaces, and continues to torment her up until her wedding day to Lucas.[6] Lucas, and Sami's wedding day arrives, and Kate reveals that EJ slept with Sami. Lucas stands by Sami's side, and marries her. EJ follows them on their honeymoon, where Celeste performs a ritual revealing that Sami's unborn baby is his child. Celeste warns him, that his father, Stefano could harm the baby . Under pressure from Tony, EJ kidnaps Sami to harbor the stem cells that can save Stefano's life. Sami tells EJ she will only allow the baby's stem cells to be used if it will mean an end to the ongoing Brady-DiMera vendetta. Sami gives birth to twins, one is EJ's, and one is Lucas's. EJ marries Sami soon after, but is shot by Lucas at their wedding. The two later split up.[7] On April 21, 2009, EJ marries Nicole, despite the fact that he is in denial about still loving Sami. Sami fails in her attempt to stop the wedding and tell EJ that Grace is his daughter. Shortly thereafter, Sami witnesses an assassination and is forced to hide in Witness Protection to protect her from the hit man. This allows her to successfully hide her pregnancy from EJ. Meanwhile, Nicole eventually miscarries. Devastated by the loss of her own child as well as being fully aware of her husband's reppressed love for his ex-wife (and that he only married her because of the baby), Nicole sets into motion a scheme that will keep EJ with her by making him think that she still had his baby. Deceiving EJ into believing that she was still pregnant, Nicole plans to adopt the baby of a teenage girl, Mia McCormick. Mia and Sami give birth on the same day at the same clinic. Nicole, realizing who the father of Sami's baby is, switches the two babies, preferring to raise EJ's biological daughter.[8] Nicole and EJ name "their" daughter, Sydney Anne DiMera in February 2009. In the meantime, Sami returns from the Witness Protection Program, at first leaving "her" baby, Grace Rafaela Brady at an orphanage to insure her protection from the DiMeras. In March 2009, Sami brings Grace home, telling everybody that she was adopted. Two months later, afters Grace's tragic death from meningitis, Sami finally tells EJ that his daughter was born while Sami was in the Witness Protection Program. He is devastated to know that he had lost a daughter he had never known. Shortly thereafter, he also discovers that Nicole had indeed miscarried. He believes that he lost two daughters, not knowing that Sydney was in fact his daughter with Sami. He rejects them all, despite the fact that EJ continues to deeply love Sydney. Nicole, not wanting to lose the last thing she has left, maintains that Sydney is Mia's daughter and dupes the poor teenager into supporting her claim to the child, even though she knows that Mia's real child is dead.[9] Eventually, through the efforts of FBI agent Rafe Hernandez (Sami's new boyfriend) the truth of Nicole's baby swap comes to light. Nicole flees with the child to Cleveland, where she is attacked and Sydney is kidnapped.[10] At the start of the New Year it is revealed that the kidnapper is EJ's sister-in-law, Anna DiMera. Later it is also revealed that EJ is the one calling the shots and paying Anna $5,000,000 for her efforts. He wants to punish Sami and Nicole (who is now in prison) for their betrayals of him. His original plan is to take Sydney and his son Johnny away, after making everyone think Sydney is dead. However, when he sees Sami's devastation at losing another child, he reconsiders and brings Sydney home, presenting himself as the hero and embarrassing Rafe who was leading the FBI investigation. Through his schemes, Rafe and Sami break-up. Sami's kindness and openness with EJ eases his anger towards her regarding her lying about the pregnancy, and he forgives her. They re-bond over Sydney, and he realizes that he still loves her. His conscience begins to weigh on him about the kidnapping and hurting Sami, but he knows that he would lose her and his children forever if the truth were ever revealed. He proposed to Sami, but Rafe told Sami he kidnapped Sydney she broke off the wedding and later shot him in rage. He is currently faking aniesti.
