Monte Vista's women's water polo team won North Coast Section (NCS) titles in 2003, 2004 and 2006 before claiming this year's title with an 11-5 victory over Miramonte at the Soda Aquatic Center at Campolindo High School. Monte Vista's Track and Field Team has done well. It has broken a number of school records in the past 2 years. They were almost undefeated in East Bay Athletic League (EBAL) dual meets losing only to cross-town rival San Ramon Valley High School. The school continues to do well in track and field, bringing in new talent from local middle schools each year. Monte Vista's women's tennis team has also done well. In the Women's 2005 year, the team won in the EBAL and placed second at NCS, losing their match to their biggest tennis rival, Foothill High School[disambiguation needed]. Mia Giovinetti advanced to the finals of the individual EBAL tournament, and in doubles the freshman duo Sheena Chaudhuri and Elena Cadet won the doubles tournament of the EBAL finals. The MV tennis team also placed an overall fifth out of over 60 schools from the state of California at the annual Peach Tree Tournament in Fresno. Monte Vista's men's tennis team has done well the last couple of years. In 2003, the men's tennis team won the NCS team title. Then in 2004, Mike Starr won the NCS singles title, and won the EBAl singles title in each consecutive year. Then in 2006, the doubles pair of Tim Latin and Ramsey Lemaich won the NCS doubles title. Then they went without an NCS team title for 5 years, until 2008, where they beat Alameda to win the NCS team title. In individuals, Shaun Chaudhuri won the EBAL singles tournament and reached the NCS semis as a freshman. Shane Swinnerton and James Moody won the doubles EBAL tournament. After winning the NCS team title, they went to the CIF tournament and for the first time ever, they got the finals of the CIF team tournament. In 2009, the men's team had a three way tie for first place in the California high school classic tournament which had 60 high schools from all over Northern California. Later in the year, Chris Kipouras won the EBAL singles tournament, and Brendan Wee and Chris Meyer won the EBAL doubles title. Then Shaun Chaudhuri brought back Monte Vista its first NCS singles title since 2004. Also, in 2009, the team got 2nd at NCS team tournament, and headed to CIF for the second consecutive year. Monte Vista's women's golf team has also been an important force. Being the first public school to win back to back titles (2005 & 2006) in the East Bay Athletic League, North Coast Sections, and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Northern California, the girls of the Monte Vista High School golf team are one of the best teams in the state[citation needed]. In 2008 the Mustangs had an average season, but surprisingly made it to the NCS finals, losing to Amador Valley High of Pleasanton. The Mustangs went undefeated in 2010, winning EBAL and NCS. In 2006, the Monte Vista Men's Soccer team won NCS for the first time in school history. The team was led by goalkeeper B.J. Burns, and 8 other All-League starters. They defeated Livermore, De La Salle, and Richmond in the playoffs en route to their first Section championship ever. Controversy In 2007, a district audit found that nearly $100,000 in funds raised by graduating classes were misappropriated by administrators for items not approved by the students.[6] In 2009, Rebecca Smith, principal at Monte Vista, went on paid leave on October 8, 2009 when she "handled a gun in an inappropriate manner in the presence of a student." The incident occurred because the student athlete, Ellyette Gheno, had brought an inflatable toy resembling a gun to a girls' volleyball game. Smith drew an air-soft pistol from her desk and asked the student how it made her feel when the gun was pointed at her. Although the student was not the one to inform the district, a witness nearby did. The district determined that it was an air-soft pistol that she was handling and considered a toy instead of a weapon.[6] References ^ "GNIS Detail - Monte Vista High School".
