It is the 82nd largest island on earth. The northernmost point of the island is called the Arctic Cape. This is the launching point for many Arctic expeditions. The area of this island has been estimated at 9,006 km². It rises to a height of 780 m. Some 65% of island is covered with glaciers. Komsomolets Island is home to the largest ice cap in Russia, the Academy of Sciences Ice Cap.[1]. The soil of the island is mostly composed of loose loam and sands, a tundra desert scattered with mosses and lichens.[2] The island was first explored and named by the expedition of Georgy Ushakov and Nikolay Urvantsev in 1930 - 32. In keeping with their scheme of naming the islands after events and movements of the Russian Revolution, this island was named in honour of the members of the Komsomol, the "Communist Union of Youth". There has been a request to rename this island Svyataya Mariya (St. Maria).[3] See also Photos of the Academy of Science Ice Cap: [1] Facts and dramatic satellite photos of the islands of the Severnaya Zemlya group: [2] References ^ http://www.ecoshelf.ru/eng/nauka/exp_4.php Ecoshelf ^ http://www.oceandots.com/arctic/severnaya-zemlya Russian Arctic - Severnaya Zemlya ^ Search - Krasnoyarsk Territory - Rosnedvizhimost Coordinates: 80°34′N 94°29′E / 80.567°N 94.483°E / 80.567; 94.483 v • d • e Islands of the Kara Sea (Russian Arctic) Arkticheskiy Institut Islands • Belukha and Prodolgovatyy • Bely Island • Bera Island • Bolshoi Korsakovsky Islands • Bonevi • Dzhekman Islands • Dikson Island • Eastern Islands • Firnley Islands • Gavrilova • Graham Bell Island • Heiberg Islands • Helland-Hansen Island • Izvestiy TSIK Islands • Kamennyye Islands • Khalyango • Kirov Islands • Kolchak Island • Kolomeytseva Islands • Kolosovykh • Komsomolets • Krasnoflotskiye • Krestovsky Island • Krusenstern Islands • Labyrintovyye • Levdiyev Island • Levinson-Lessing Island • Lishniy • Litke Island • Litke Islands • Markgama • Mestnyy • Minina Skerries • Mona Islands • Moristyy • Myachina Islands • Nablyudeniy • Nansen Island • Neupokoyeva • Nordenskiöld Archipelago • Nosok • Novaya Zemlya • October Revolution • Oleniy • Pakhtusov Islands • Pilota Makhotkina • Pioneer Island • Plavnikovyye • Proklyatyye • Rastorguyev Island • Russky Island • Schmidt Island • Scott Hansen Islands • Sedov Archipelago • Severnaya Zemlya • Severny Island • Shokalsky • Shren Islands • Sibiryakov Island • Sorevnovaniya • Storozhevyye • Sverdrup Island • Taymyra • Tillo Islands • Tsivolko Islands • Ushakov Island • Uyedineniya • Vaygach Island • Vilkitsky Island • Vize Island • Voronina • Yarzhinsky Islands • Yermolov Island • Yuzhny Island • Zveroboy v • d • e Islands of the Laptev Sea (Russian Arctic) Aerosyemki • Anzhu Islands • Arangastakh • Belkovsky Island • Bolshevik • Bolshoy Begichev • Brusneva • Bulgunnyakhtakh-Belkey • Chychas-Aryta • Daldalakh • Dallalakh • Dunay Islands • Dzhyangylakh • Faddey Islands • Bolshoy Lyakhovsky • Komsomolets • Komsomolskaya Pravda Islands • Kotelny • Lena Delta Islands  • Leykina • Little Lyakhovsky • Lyakhovsky Islands • Makar Island • Maliy Begichev • Maly Taymyr • Muostakh • Nanosnyy • New Siberian Islands • Orto Ary • Peschanyy • Petrushka • Preobrazheniya • Psov Island • Sagastyr • Saint Andrew Island • Saint Peter Islands • Salkay • Samakh Ary Dyete • Samolyota • Semyonovsky • Severnaya Zemlya • Shelonsky Islands • Starokadomsky • Stolbovoy • Vos'mogo Marta • Vilkitsky Islands • Yarok • Zalivnyye Islands This Krasnoyarsk Krai location article is a stub.
