Nagarbhavi Location of Nagarbhavi in Bengaluru and India Coordinates 12°58′N 77°31′E / 12.96°N 77.52°E / 12.96; 77.52 Time zone IST (UTC+5:30) Nagarabhavi (also Nagarbhavi) is a residential area of Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Located in West Bangalore, it is located between Mysore road and Magadi road. It is surrounded by Vijaynagar on the north, Bangalore University and Chandra Layout on the east, Magadi road on the west and Sir.M.V.Layout on the south. Nagarbhavi is broadly divided into two areas, called Nagarbhavi 1st stage and Nagarbhavi 2nd stage. Traditionally known as the home of Bangalore University, this area also houses the prestigious National Law School of India University and Ambedkar Institute of Technology. Nagarbhavi 1st stage comprises localities like Kalyana Nagara, Nagarbhavi Village, Canara bank colony, Bhairaveshwara Nagara, Moodala Palya, amongst others. These areas are very thickly populated and have a lot of commercial activity along the Nagarbhavi main road. These areas have smaller roads and a rough terrain. Nagarbhavi village is probably the oldest part of town. It was in existence before everything else came up. Nagarbhavi circle was the hub of all activities for a long time. It doesn't exist anymore because of all the contstruction work related to the Outer Ring Road (which began in 2007/8). When the Institute for Social and Economic Change (abbreviated as ISEC) came up in the 1970s (the foundation stone was laid by the Late Indira Gandhi in 1976), it was first major establishment in Nagarbhavi. It was modeled on the Delhi School of Economics and was founded by the Late Dr VKRV Rao. It counts many eminent academicians amongsts its products (namely Dr Manmohan Singh). ISEC resulted in new roads, more people moving in, real estate development and set in motion a series of events that basically starting the process of enhancing Nagarbhavi. For starters, Bus Routes 235, 235A, 235B, 235C, 235F were introduced to Nagarbhavi connecting Nagarbhavi to commercial hubs in the city.(The NLSIU and other institutions which followed on later benefited greatly and contributed significantly to the development of Nagarbhavi). Nagarbhavi 2nd stage is a complete contrast to the 1st stage. While the 1st stage is very old, the 2nd stage is a relatively new area. It is very well planned and most of the areas have wide roads and the road connectivity is laudable. Most of the roads here are now tarred, ending the age old woes of the people residing here. The BDA has divided Nagarbhavi 2nd stage into blocks 1-12. In addition, well planned residential localities like Vinayaka Layout, Annapoorneshwari Nagara, ITI Layout, MPM Layout, NGEF Layout and Papareddy Palya form a part of this area. Contents 1 History 2 Culture 3 Schools and Colleges 4 Getting there 5 Recent Update // History In Kannada, the language of a majority of the inhabitants of the city of Bangalore, Nagarbhavi means literally "a well of snakes". It is not conclusively known, however, why it is called so. One school of thought is that the name is due to the high number of snakes present in the area. Also, some believe that it is called a "well" because of the surrounding hillocks that are no longer present due to urbanization. Old timers of Nagarbhavi actually refer to a well, which exists in the village which has the reputation of being "The Well" aka The Bhavi. While it is not known if the well is still present, it was one of the oldest landmarks in the village. Culture Nagarbhavi and Vijayanagar are the hubs of Western Bangalore with a predominantly Kannada speaking population. Nagarbhavi has number of temples. The Annapoorneshwari temple in the aptly named Annapoorneshwari Nagara and the Bhavani Shankara temple in Papareddy Palya was famous. There is also a Raghavendra Mutt in Papareddy Palya that is famous. The BDA Shopping Complex is in Nagarbhavi 2nd stage, on the ring road, at the entrance of Annapoorneshwari Nagar. This area is abuzz with commercial activity. A Cafe Coffee Day outlet is the new addition to the area. Nagarbhavi main road in the 1st stage is completely chaotic with a lot of commercial activity. One can find restaurants and fast food centers in this area. Nagarbhavi is also one of the oldest localities in Bangalore. This makes it one of the most conservative places to live in Bangalore. It has a substantial population of long-term, mostly Kannada-speaking residents with established family ties to the locality. The residents are mainly middle class. The initial residents were mainly villagers from the old Nagarbhavi village. Nagarbhavi 2nd stage consists mostly of the upper middle class population with a large population of government officers and executives, but recently there has been a large influx of business owners and young IT professionals. Being at the western part of Bangalore, living in Nagarbhavi means a very short commute for employees working in Government offices in the central business district and longer commute to major IT employers for many of its residents. However, with a lot of greenery around, and with a series of commercial establishments coming up shortly in its vicinity, Nagarbhavi has maintained its desirability for the upwardly-mobile, family-oriented crowd. The famous Vrishabhavati river flows through this area. The river is very polluted these days and smells foul at times. Wockhardt Hospital has recently opened a branch in Nagarbhavi 2nd Stage, which is well equipped with state of the art ICU Care. The area is also well served by public buses of the BMTC. The public transportation to the Nagarbhavi 2nd stage includes buses from Majestic(BMTC Bus Number 244c) and City Market(Bus Number 244). The major attraction near Nagarbhavi 2nd Stage is the BDA Complex which is a shopping complex. A lot of buses are also introduced now for the second stage which run on the ring road which include buses from Banashankari to Banashankari which run through the whole ring road. For all the people who prefer to commute by the AC Volvo buses, here is an update. BMTC has launched a new route V-333T (V for Volvo) which starts from Nagarbhavi BDA complex and runs till ITPL via Chandra Layout, Vijaynagar, Majestic, HAL and Marathalli bridge. Recent Update BDA is constructing the remaining part of the Outer Ring Road. This road passes through the Nagarbhavi circle and BDA alloted Nagarbhavi 2nd stage areas and connect the Magadi road and Mysore road. The underpass (subway) at Nagarbhavi is now complete. Also, the stretch from Nagarbhavi circle to Magadi road service lanes is complete. Good progress is happening on the construction of the overbridge at the Magadi road junction. This road hopes to save some commute time for the local residents who work in IT companies and commute to Electronic City and Whitefield. Another major development in this area is the repairing of the Nagarbhavi main road from the Ronn-Inn junction to the Ambedkar College junction on the current ring road. The road has been widened and tarred recently. A new bridge has been built across the river Vrishabhavati. The road is very wide and paves way for new commercial establishments in this area. v • d • e Bangalore topics History History of Bangalore · Kadambas of Banavasi · Western Ganga Dynasty · Chalukya Empire · Rashtrakuta Empire · Hoysala Empire · Vijayanagara Empire · Kingdom of Mysore, Tipu Sultan · Kempe Gowda  · Bangalore Cantonment · Bengaluru Pete · Bangalore Fort Places of worship Bull Temple · Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple · ISKCON · Halasuru Someshwara Temple · Dodda Ganesha Temple · Ragigudda Anjaneya temple · St. Mary's Basilica · Jamia Masjid · St Patrick's Church · Infant Jesus Church Buildings Vidhana Soudha · Visvesvaraya Museum · Nehru Planetarium · Karnataka High Court · Daly Memorial Hall · Mayo Hall · Town Hall · Utility Building · M.
