The Substation, photographed on 21 January 2006 The Substation is Singapore's first and only independent contemporary arts centre. It was founded in 1990 by Kuo Pao Kun. The Substation is centrally located in the city's civic district. Venues at The Substation for hire include a black-box theatre, a gallery, a dance studio, the Random Room and two multi-function classrooms. The Substation presents a wide range of artists and programmes, from traditionally-trained dancers to local rock bands; established visual artists to young poets; publications to international short film festivals; experimental theatre to seminal conferences on Singapore arts and culture. The Substation holds an arts festival called SeptFest annually. The current Artistic Co-Directors are Lee Weng Choy and Audrey Wong. The Substation's long-time caretaker, Mrs Chua, is renowned in Singapore's art circle. The Substation also runs an influential short films programme Moving Images which aims to nurture emerging filmmakers by giving them a voice, learning opportunities, exposure and dialogue with peers. Dialogue sessions are held in The Substation's intimate theatre which encourages profound, often intense discussions between filmmakers and audience. Over the years, The Substation has worked with some of Singapore's most critically-acclaimed artists, writers and intellectuals. The Substation has an in-house artist-incubation programme called The Associate Artist Programme. Artists under this programme include Tan Pin Pin, Royston Tan, Zai Kuning and George Chua. Melbourne Substation "The Substation" is also the name of a community arts centre in Newport, an inner western area of Melbourne, Australia. Built in the 1920s to supply electricity to the adjacent rail corridor, it's functions were moved in the 1960s to Williamstown, after which, it fell into disrepair until it's restoration in the 2000s. The venue hosted the opening exhibition of the 2010 Melbourne Fringe Festival.
