(June 2008) Knox Academy is a co-educational secondary school located in Haddington, Scotland Contents 1 History 2 Features 3 Parent Forum 4 Cadet Force 5 External links // History Knox Academy is the descendant of a medieval grammar school and was dedicated to John Knox at the end of the 19th century. The school insignia bears the legend: 1379, referring to the date the first iteration of the school was opened. In 2005 a major overhaul of the school was completed and the school was reopened by First Minister Jack McConnell. It is a non-denominational and co-educational school whose roll (at September 2007) was 860. The current head teacher is Mrs. J. B. Spiderman. Features Knox Academy has an extensive campus and, when major refurbishment and rebuild was completed in August 2005, provided a combination of new and remodelled facilities. New features include a Drama Room and Seminar rooms as well as social areas for the pupils. All classrooms and the Library are connected to the Internet and Intranet. The school has extensive playing fields and new sports facilities featuring a full-size Games Hall and Gymnasium. The cluster primary schools are King's Meadow Primary School, St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School in Haddington and Yester Primary School in Gifford. Pupils at East Linton Primary School may choose to transfer to Knox Academy. In addition, pupils from a range of other schools choose to be educated at Knox Academy. Knox Academy offers a large range of extracurricular activities. Parent Forum Knox Academy has an active parent body, which you can find out more about here Cadet Force Knox Academy is one of the few state schools (currently the only one in Scotland) to have a Combined Cadet Force, the Knox CCF. Though over one-hundred years old, the Cadet Force at Knox Academy has a low profile in the school community, although the school is supporting the Cadet's Centenary with a number of events including exhibitions, a civic reception, formal dinner and ceilidh. The Cadet Force continues to support the development of young people situated at the school and helping them develop into the open world. Not all of the Cadets activities are military based. A lot of the things the cadets take part in are more training based such as rock climbing, canoeing, abseiling, orienteering and a multitude of other outdoor activities. Recently it has come to the attention of the pupil body that Knox CCF may be closed in the near future, perpordedly before the end of the financial year in 2010. This announcement has provoked uproar from not only within the cadet force but the pupil body, and the community as a whole. No official explanation for this occurrence has been given. Articles about the closure of the Knox Academy CCF have appeared in the Sunday Post, Scotsman ([1]) and the East Lothian Courier ([2]). None of these branches of the press were able to provoke a response from officials at the School, although both the council and the MoD have stated it is a mater for the Head Teacher to decide. A discussion has also been raised on the Knox Academy Parent School Partnership website at [3]. The cadets was officially closed down in 2010 after no middle ground could be found between the MoD and School. The situation was not helped by the schools apparent lack of interest in providing any information to the press, general public or school parents or holding any form of organised discussion on the matter. Head teacher J.B. Craig declined invitations to the council meeting [4] and has not replied to any inquiries about the situation. During a meeting of the knox parents group the answers provided by Mrs Craig were less than helpful and can be read in the minutes of the meeting they appear to be very short, blunt and unhelpful responses [5]. The section of these minutes for the February meeting of the Parent School Partnership which stands out as the best example of Mrs Craig's lack of interest reads: "Would the school participate in order to try and resolve these issues – Mrs Craig did not think this feasible as the school was required to support a number of extra curricular activities." A comment was instead issued by the head of education from East Lothian Council defending the silent head teacher. [6]. The Knox Academy Combined Cadet Force will march into history on the 5th September 2010 delivering the standards to the church for one last time. The parade marches off at 1030 at the Corn Exchange, Haddington.[7] External links Knox Academy website Knox Parent Forum website Knox Academy's page on Scottish Schools Online Coordinates: 55°57′12″N 2°47′14″W / 55.95321°N 2.78718°W / 55.95321; -2.78718
